There will be cases that you want to change the URL in certain pages in your Shopify store and you find that takes a lot of time to inform all of your customers about the change. Shopify knows the concerns so that they've generated a feature to helps you solve this issue. Once you get into the Shopify platform, you can use URL redirects to move the direction from the old one to another so that customers still access the correct destination.

This writing is created to guide you on how to use the URL redirects on Shopify so that you can utilize this feature in your own store.

How to create a URL redirect 

Step 1: Go to Navigation
Step 2: Select URL redirect
Step 3: Choose create URL redirect
Step 4: Add old URL to the redirect from
Step 5: Save

 

Step 1: Go to Navigation

You first access to your Shopify admin, then go to Online Store at the left side and select the Navigation option on the menu

 

 

Step 2: Select URL redirect

There is a text "View URL redirects" at the top right of the corner, click on it to view your url redirects as well as create a new one.

 

 

Step 3: Choose create URL redirect

After you click on the button, you'll be moved to the URL redirects page so you can view all of your url redirects on the store. There is a green button - Create URL redirect, you need to press it to continue the process.

 

 

Step 4: Add the URLs to appropriate redirect box

There are 2 text-boxes "Redirect from" and "Redirect to". You need to enter the appropriate URL to the each boxes

  • Redirect from: you copy the original URL that you want to redirect visitors from and paste it into the text-box. Make sure that the old URL is not working so that visitors can not access it. Because if it's still being accessed, the redirect feature will not work. Additionally, URLs with following format (prefixes) can't be redirected: /app, /application, /cart, /carts, /orders, /shop, and /services.
  • Redirect to: enter the new destination that you want to redirect visitors to. You can enter the URL with a full link or relative one and you can choose either based on your purpose. We suggest that you should use the full link in case you want to redirect outside the primary domain. Conversely, if it's within the primary domain, the relative URL should be used. 

 

 

Step 5: Save

After you complete all the process, remember to store all the changes by clicking on the Save redirect button at the bottom or you can press the Save button at the top right corner either.
